El-Sisi made the call at a meeting in Cairo on Tuesday which included a number of African heads of state.

The Egyptian president said that the meeting aimed at reaching political solutions to the crisis in Libya, affirming that African Union countries are the closest party able to support Tripoli to eradicate terrorism.

“The Libyan people have faced many hardships during the past period which depleted their resources and capabilities,” he said.

El-Sisi stressed the necessity of enabling Libya’s national army and police to perform their role in maintaining the safety and stability of the country, which in return will help stabilise Libya’s regional radius, calling on the international community to bear its responsibility to guarantee the start of the political negotiation process between the different Libyan sides.

The Tuesday meeting on Libya saw the participation of the presidents of Rwanda, South Africa, and the Republic of the Congo, the latter acting in his capacity as head of Libya committee in the African Union. Chairman of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki also attended.

The meeting was held under the umbrella of the African Union, which is chaired by Egypt this year.
