The lawyer of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Khaled Mohamed al-Zaidi, issued a statement last night via voice recording urging all Libyans to register for the December elections because it was the most pragmatic solution towards alleviating their suffering and restore sovereignty to the country, by exercising the right to cast votes “in the ballot boxes in the upcoming elections to choose the best national candidates.”
“We remind you that the upcoming December elections and their results will determine the parameters and future of Libya in the coming decades. It is the first opportunity, and it may be the last, in which the Libyan people will determine and choose who governs them, and it is the occasion in which we declare that there is no room for exclusion and monopoly of power by the force that was the cause of the destruction of Libya; the coterie which relegated our proud country to a disintegrated entity that subsists on humanitarian aid, grants and subsidies.”—Saif al-Islam Gaddafi
(LIBYA, 21 July 2021) – AlMarsad published here a full English translation of the recorded statement by Khaled Mohamed Al-Zaidi, the lawyer representing Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious and Most Merciful
“Say, embark on work and God, His Messenger and the believers will witness your actions. Then you shall be returned to the Almighty God who knows the unseen and the declared, and the Lord will inform you of your deeds.” (Surah at-Tawba: 105)
We address this speech to you today after ten lean years in which our country, Libya, and its honorable people suffered all kinds of fragmentation, division, war, waste of resources and wealth, hardship of living, loss of security and safety, and loss of opportunities for development and progress, which turned into mere ruins today.
All this happened due to the criminal external interference that destroyed the country and its institutions, plundered the land of Libya, subjugated its people, stripped it of its sovereignty and independence, tore the social fabric, spread hate speech, grudges and strife among the components of society, and imported and domesticated all the forces and manifestations of transnational terrorism in our country.
To the residents of our quiet and peaceful villages;
To all the members of our steadfast and resilient tribes;
To all those who have experienced exclusion and marginalization;
To the internally and externally displaced Libyans who were unjustly expelled from their homes by brute force;
To the dignified women of Libya who were forced to leave their houses, and abandon their education and stand in long humiliating queues in front of the country’s banks and bakeries;
To the Libyan cadres and scientific and academic competencies that all obstacles were placed in front of them inside their country; who were forcibly displaced to get out of Libya to disenfranchise their country of opportunities for progress and advancement by the arms of its youth and to resume the march of growth and prosperity;
To the hard-working and promising Libyan youth who were turned by the enemies and their clients and proxies into armed gangs and militias fighting each other for the benefit of a limited clique of individuals who have been plundering the wealth of our country;
To the dedicated Libyan teachers who are experiencing difficult circumstances that prevent them from performing their sacred and eternal educational mission to the fullest possible extent;
To the faculty members at Libyan universities and institutes who complain about and feel heartbreak when they see what happened to the educational process; leakage of students, distortion in curricula, and a catastrophic failure in the outputs, which led to the emergence of the spectre of illiteracy again in our country, which was one of the leading countries in eradicating illiteracy;
To the doctors and paramedical staff who raise the alarm every morning about the imminent resurgence of diseases that have been eradicated since the mid-seventies of the last century, who today stand in the front lines of defense against the pandemic, sacrificing their safety and their lives to fight the Covid-19 and its variants in the worst conditions and in light of the scarcity medical capabilities, despite the allocation and disbursement of billions of Libyan dinars that were looted and transferred to the accounts of public money thieves of an extremist clique, who have no empathy whatsoever with the Libyans besieged by the danger of demise;
To the technocrats, bankers, economists and financial experts who realize the magnitude of the economic disaster that the country is facing and warn of a bankruptcy scenario awaiting our country and threatening the livelihood of its people with destitution and hunger;
To the workers in the oil sector who struggle to maintain the safety and integrity of the process of oil production and export lines, the sole source of livelihood for Libyans, whose equipment and production and export technology suffer from wear and tear after it became a tool in the hands of the fuel smuggling and oil extortion mafias in the country; to those workers in the oil sector who discovered the conspiracy and realized that the target is the nation’s resources and reserves for the future of a decent life for its children;
We say to all of you that your registration today in the electorate system is the main pragmatic solution that will empower you to be aligned with the political efforts towards alleviating the suffering of your people, restoring the sovereignty of your country, and securing the future of your generations by exercising your right to cast your votes in the ballot boxes in the upcoming elections to choose the best national candidates.
You should express, with the loudest voice, that your registration today is a national entitlement dictated by the extremely difficult circumstances your country is going through, in order to save it from the schemes of destruction and division, and an important addition to support those who preceded you to register in the previous elections, looking forward to deliverance from the ongoing destruction and chaos, and to resume the process of stability, development, prosperity and peace.
We remind you that the upcoming December elections and their results will determine the parameters and future of Libya in the coming decades. It is the first opportunity, and it may be the last, in which the Libyan people will determine and choose who governs them, and it is the occasion in which we declare that there is no room for exclusion and monopoly of power by the force that was the cause of the destruction of Libya; the coterie which relegated our proud country to a disintegrated entity that subsists on humanitarian aid, grants and subsidies.
These elections must witness an unprecedented turnout by all components of Libyan society to achieve the desired results for the benefit of the country, and it must witness a large-scale participation of young people on the grounds that they are the most targeted groups in the electoral process because of its effects on their lives and future.
Registering your names in the voters’ rosters will affirm your positive and effective political participation in shaping the future of your country, thus blocking the way for the opportunists, the corrupt, the thieves and the usurpers of the state treasury to reach the helm of power to recreate the continuous nightmare of crises and bottlenecks and to waste the aspirations and hopes of your great people for stability, peace, progress and prosperity into thin air.
Today, we call on all the patriotic forces at home and abroad, the active social forces, civil society institutions and organizations, youth and women segments to work with perseverance and earnestness, and close ranks for the sake of our beloved homeland for which your ancestors and fathers sacrificed their blood.
O’ Libyans, men and women, who look forward to a bright future for an independent and sovereign country, to embody the free and independent will of our people, let us extend our hands to each other and reconcile; let us work together to save our country; let us forget the past and turn a new page and look forward to the upcoming elections on 24 December to achieve a historic victory for Libya; let us all participate in the elections.
May Peace be Upon You All
Power and Glory to the Almighty God
