After the extraordinary session of the Security Council convened by the United States, the majority of member countries rejected any military intervention in Venezuela.
The member states of the Security Council of the United Nations met on Thursday to vote on the draft resolutions presented by the delegations of the United States and Russia on Venezuela.
With regard to the draft resolution promoted by the US, it obtained nine votes in favour, three against and three abstentions. The double veto of Russia and China defined that this interfering proposal did not succeed.
For its part, the Russian resolution obtained four votes in favour, seven against and four abstentions, so this initiative was not approved either.
This vote comes after last Tuesday’s second extraordinary session convened by the US to discuss the political situation in Venezuela, which reiterated the rejection by the majority of a military intervention in the South American nation.
Russia’s draft resolution establishes that a peaceful solution based on dialogue between the parties involved is necessary, supporting the Montevideo Mechanism (Uruguay) which does not favour interference in the country’s internal affairs.
“Russia supports mechanisms that seek to promote peace and dialogue in Venezuela, such as the Montevideo Mechanism, and urges states to defend the principles enshrined in the UN Charter,” said the Russian representative to the organization, Vasily Nebenzya.
In contrast, the U.S. initiative has promoted its interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs by requesting a presidential election, a demand that ignores the elections held on May 20, 2018, in which President Nicolás Maduro won with 67 percent of the votes.
Donald Trump’s U.S. government has reiterated on several occasions that it keeps “all options on the table” for Venezuela, as well as its threats of military intervention in that country.
