Nicaragua: The Coup Plot Against the Sandinista Government

Patricio Montesinos

The persistence of violence in Nicaragua, the delays in the Dialogue for Peace and the last minute conditions in the negotiations by the so-called opposition and the “mediating” National Episcopal Conference (CEN), suggest that a coup plan is underway against the Sandinista government of President Daniel Ortega.

Since the unleashing of violence in Nicaragua on April 18, which has caused significant economic loss and damage, little or no progress has been made in the search for a solution to the conflict in a country that has stood out for its prosperity and its peaceful vocation

Political analysts agree that the weak national right and bishops of the CEN are accomplices in a covert plan orchestrated in the United States, in collusion with the oligarchy, aimed at the destruction of the Sandinista Revolution.

Although the CEN occupies the position of “mediator” in the dialogue between the government and its opponents, in practice it has not assumed that role.

The events, specifically last-minute conditions given to FSLN officials and the suspension of negotiations between the parties on Wednesday, raise questions about the CEN becoming a voice for the opposition in Nicaragua.

The CEN made their continuation in the dialogue conditional to the presence of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, shortly after the talks were interrupted, and after submitting an agenda of 40 points which contain, among numerous demands, advanced presidential elections and a reform of the Constitution.

Nicaraguan chancellor, Denis Moncada, denounced the agenda as a camouflaged route for a coup d’état, to change the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity outside the legal system, in violation of the Constitution and the democracy that rules the country.

And Moncada is right because there is clear evidence that Nicaragua is the target of another operation against the progressive governments in the Great Homeland, using the same modus operandi applied in several nations of this hemisphere.

While the Sandinista government and the majority of the people insist on peace, unity and the search for a negotiated solution to violence, the battered Nicaraguan right wing encourages violence and vandalism while Washington finances it.
