Peru: Alto Huarca Families Denounce Abuses by State Police and Glencore Antapaccay

The families of the Alto Huarca community, Yauri district, in Espinar province, are denouncing the abuse of authority by the National Police and the Glencore Antapaccay mining company, after ten people have been beaten and threatened during an attempt to evict them from their land.

On April 3, a police contingent, along with eight officials from the Glencore Antapaccay mine, entered the community of Alto Huarca to evict families from the area. Stating that their land is not for sale, mothers and grandmothers faced the police to defend their homes while the troops pushed, beat, kicked and insulted Rocio Huaquira, María Huaquira and Eufrosina Umasi who were seriously injured.

Eufrosina Omasi told us that the mining company has been harassing the community of Alto Huarca day and night to sell their land to make way for a road for the exclusive use of the company. Antapacca staff told them they can buy the land for two hundred dollars, otherwise this payment will be made to the State and they will not receive anything. Eufrosina added that as soon as a lawyer and a journalist were present in the area, the police could not sustain the intervention.
