São Paulo Forum Rejects Imperialist Interference in Venezuela and Supports April Elections

The Working Group of the São Paulo Forum rejects and condemns the imperialist interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela commanded by US President Donald Trump and obeyed by the subaltern governments of the so-called Lima Group.

Venezuela and the government of President Maduro, democratically elected, are still brutally attacked and are now threatened in their own borders, following the interventionist tour of the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, which evoked the worst moments of the Monroe doctrine against our continent and our sovereignty in defending military coups for the resolution of crises provoked by those same agents.

It is up to the Venezuelan people to decide their destiny sovereignly and democratically, without interference or external aggression from imperial powers that claim to be the “owners” of our continent. We support the realization of the elections convened for the month of April, carried out by the institutions of the country, according to the protocol of the dialogue process held in the Dominican Republic, where the political solution negotiated between the opposition and the Venezuelan Government was sought, and that was built with the support of mediators such as the president of this country, Danilo Medina, and former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero.

We also reject the subordinate position of the foreign ministers of 12 of the 35 countries of the Summit of the Americas (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia) of “repudiate “Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of the next meeting of the Summit of the Americas, to be held in Lima in April, and which could become a mere picnic of the club of Donald Trump’s friends.

In the recent past, our continent already demonstrated to the world, through legitimate governments and identified with the people, its capacity to build democratic, peaceful, cooperation and regional integration solutions, by creating CELAC and declare our region as a region of peace .

We vehemently condemn the constant US interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela and of any other country in Our America. We will be with the Venezuelan people and President Maduro in the construction of a free and sovereign Latin America and the Caribbean.
