Cuba’s National Association of Small Farmers issues a statement expressing solidarity with the Venezuelan people, and denouncing the Organization of American States’ attempts to invoke the Inter-American Charter against this sister country.
We Cuban campesinos support the valiant attitude taken by the Venezuelan people and government, in the face of the ignominious attacks of the discredited Organization of American States (OAS), attempting to invoke the Inter-American Charter.
Once again, the yankee Ministry of Colonies violates the sovereignty of one of our peoples, but once again the voice of dignity defends independence and self-determination of a country where human rights have been expanded and strengthened over the last two decades.
We are aware of the machinations of the OAS, which has supported so many aggressions and military interventions, and remained silent before multiple violations of the most basic human and democratic rights of Our America.
THE OAS does not recognize the Bolivarian government, headed by President Nicolás Maduro Moros, which has worked to dignify the people and in particular small farmers, especially on the social, economic, and productive order, via programs directed toward the distribution of land, access to technology, education, healthcare, technical and cultural training, among others.
We know that, for the first time in a many years, Venezuelan campesinos have been taken into consideration. Their voices were present during the crafting of the new Constitution and the Land Law, with many benefits. Previously, campesinos and their leaders were attacked and assassinated as they exercised their right to claim lands to cultivate. All of this changed when the Bolivarian Revolution triumphed.
With this new aggression, the imperialists are attempting to impede the progress and rights of small framers and the people in general, resorting to violence and foreign intervention to reestablish a shameless regime.
We are sure that, with the entire Venezuelan people, small farmers will be able to join forces and defeat the attacks of imperialism, which will again and again insist on imposing its interests, not included among which are the struggle against poverty, equality, or collective wellbeing.
We call on organizations of small farmers, indigenous peoples, and farm workers around the world to express their solidarity with the people’s struggle in the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the face of this new, disgraceful aggression by the OAS, orchestrated by U.S. imperialism.
We assume the declaration of our country which reiterated “the sureness of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, approved by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, in its insistence on the principle of treating each other respectfully and fraternally, and at the same time, as independent states, demanding that we be treated as equals.”
We likewise support the position of the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, and his government, in the face of this new imperialist attack.
We reaffirm that Venezuela is not alone. We will continue to struggle united to preserve the ideals of Comandante Hugo Chávez Frías and our undefeated Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz.
